I was brought up in London in the 1950s and 1960s and enjoyed all that those times had to offer. To be different, which was very much in vogue at the time, I studied Russian and Chinese in London and lived in both countries thanks to a British Council scholarship (Russia 1982-3) and one of the first student exchange schemes with China after the Cultural Revolution in Beijing (1983-4). I moved to Russia in 1985 to work as a translator for the (then) Soviet publishing house ‘Raduga’ in Moscow; in 1986. My view of the world has been affected by what I have experienced in both countries, where I have spent the best part of 30 years of my life studying and working .
My journalism career culminated in ’Editor-in-Chief’ positions of English language magazines in Russia, which were focused, not exclusively, on cultural and lifestyle themes. A recurrent theme throughout all my work has been the connection between politics and culture.
On this site present my two books which hopefully communicate aspects of what it has been like living in Russia and China over the past 30 years. ‘Trapped Between Cultures’ (my first book published in 2019), and ‘Voices from Russia: Witnesses to Change, 1970-2000‘, (published in 2021).
I also present selected articles that I have written during my long association with English language magazines published in Russia, from 1995 to 2021. Such material should not be reviewed without taking into account the time and context when they were written.
